AI tools like ChatGPT and GitHub Copilot are now standard in engineering classrooms — they're changing how students write, debug, and think about code. But here's the paradox: assignment completion rates are rising, while faculty are increasingly reporting declining conceptual clarity and debugging ability.
That contradiction is exactly what my research question addresses:
"To what extent does generative AI degrade first-principles problem-solving and cognitive endurance among undergraduate engineering students?"
My position is this: AI must be sequenced, not banned.
Manual, first-principles execution must come first — only after that baseline is established should AI enter as an upper-level accelerant.
There are two mechanisms at work here. First, cognitive offloading — AI bypasses the "desirable difficulty" of translating abstract logic into executable syntax. Students skip the struggle, and with it, the understanding. Second, the abstraction penalty — when engineers integrate AI-generated modules into complex systems without foundational knowledge, they can't catch what the AI gets wrong, including critical security flaws.

Argument one: Erosion of desirable difficulty. Manual debugging isn't a flaw in the learning process — it is the learning process. Systematic reviews confirm that over-relying on AI without attempting problems independently reduces critical thinking capacity. And the data does support productivity gains — GitHub Copilot shows 55% faster task completion. Major tech companies are already building AI-native onboarding. The argument is that keeping AI out of early education leaves graduates underprepared.
